To implement APEC Leaders’ Declarations and APEC ocean-related action plans and to increase the contribution of the ocean to social and economic development of the Asia-Pacific region, APEC Marine Sustainable Development Center (AMSD) was established, as discussed and approved at the 23rd Marine Resources Conservation Working Group (MRCWG) Meeting, and demonstrated in the Paracas Declaration and the Joint Statement of the 22nd APEC Ministerial Meeting. On November 1, 2011, the Unveiling Ceremony for AMSD was officially held in Beijing, for which the Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang wrote a congratulation letter. AMSD is the first marine cooperation mechanism established by China within the APEC framework. It is situated in and supported by the Third Institute of Oceanography (TIO) of State Oceanic Administration (SOA) in Xiamen, China.
Through decision consulting, policy research, workshop training, information sharing and project demonstration, AMSD aims to promote the practical cooperation among the APEC economies in such fields as marine economy development, ecosystem management, response to climate change and marine disaster preparedness, establish collaborative partnerships, and in a joint effort advance the marine sustainable development for the Asia-Pacific region.
